Learning Support
Support Programs to Help Every Student Achieve
At St Gregory the Great, we have dedicated programs to ensure every student meets their potential.
Learning Support
We believe that every child has a right to the best opportunities possible. In order to assist students in achieving their personal best, we have many support programs which can aid them in their learning.
We have a group of dedicated Learning Support Officers (LSOs) who work alongside students to assist them in areas of need based on teacher recommendations.
Teachers construct Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) for students in consultation with the student wellbeing leader and parents. Program Support Group (PSG) meetings are scheduled regularly to update parents in regards to their child’s needs and achievements.

10 Tips for Preparing Your Child (and Yourself!) for the First Day at St Gregory's Doncaster
Starting school is a significant milestone for both parents and children. At St Gregory’s Doncaster, we understand the excitement and nerves that come with this new chapter and that it’s natural for your child to experience some jitters. So, to help your child transition into school life confidently, we’ve put
together our top ten tips to help both you and your child prepare for this exciting transition:
1. Establish Predictable Routines: Create a consistent evening schedule with set dinner, bath, and bedtime routines. A sense of predictability helps your child feel secure.
2. Stay Positive and Excited: Keep the conversation about school upbeat. Address any concerns your child might have, but focus on the fun aspects of learning and making new friends.
3. Read Together: Foster a love for learning by reading together. Visits to the library can also open up the wonderful world of books.
4. Encourage Independence: Encourage your child to dress themselves, pack their school bag, and use the toilet independently. These small steps build confidence.
5. Arrange Play Dates: Set up play dates with other children who will be attending St Gregory’s. This helps your child build friendships before school starts.
6. Label All Belongings: Make sure all of your child’s belongings are clearly labelled with their name to prevent lost items.
7. Discuss After School Plans: Talk about the after-school routine so your child knows what to expect each day.
8. Check School Times: Familiarise yourself with the school’s start and finish times, as well as the drop-off and pick up
procedures.
9. Use Their Teacher’s Name: Once you know your child’s teacher, use their name in daily conversations to build a sense
of familiarity and trust.
10. Practise the Journey: Familiarise your child with the route to and from school. A practice run can help them feel secure and comfortable with the journey.
We are excited to be part of your child’s educational journey and look forward to welcoming you into the St Gregory’s family!

How to Choose a School for Your Child
Selecting the right school for your child is a big decision. To make the best choice, it’s important to consider a variety of factors that align with your child's needs and your family’s values. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this exciting
journey:
Reflect on Family Priorities
Start by thinking about what matters most to your family. Is the school’s location convenient for your daily routine? This can significantly impact your child's day and your family’s schedule. Consider the school’s educational philosophy – does it resonate with your beliefs about learning and development? Whether your child thrives in academics, arts, or sports, ensure the school supports their unique interests and talents.
Visit and Explore
Take time to visit potential schools and soak in their atmosphere. Observe the classroom dynamics and interactions between teachers and students. Chat with teachers and staff to gain a sense of their approach to education and discipline.
Check out the facilities, from the library to the playground, and see how the school supports learning experiences.
By following these steps, you can confidently choose a school that offers a nurturing and stimulating environment for your child’s growth.

How to Handle First-Day Nerves: Helping Your Child Overcome Separation Anxiety
The first day of school can often be accompanied by mixed emotions. While excitement may be in the air, separation anxiety can also creep in, causing stress for your little one. Understanding and addressing these feelings can ensure a smooth transition into this new chapter here at St Gregory’s.
Here are some strategies to help your child conquer those first-day nerves.
Start by establishing a positive pre-school routine. In the weeks leading up to school, gradually introduce your child to the idea of separation. Talk about the exciting aspects of school, such as making new friends, engaging in fun activities, and learning new things. Arrange playdates with future classmates if you have connections, or visit the school together to get to know the environment. This gradual exposure can alleviate anxiety and build a sense of comfort and familiarity.
On the big day, stay calm. Your child will likely pick up on your emotional cues, so try to be upbeat and confident. Create a special farewell ritual, such as a secret handshake or a comforting hug, to reassure your child that goodbyes are temporary. Remind them that you’ll be back soon and that school is a safe place filled with support. Encourage your child to express how they feel and listen attentively to their concerns. Validating their emotions will empower them to face the day with courage and confidence.
By incorporating these strategies, you can help ease your child’s transition, transforming first-day nerves into excitement
and readiness.
